Adrian Jackson “A.J.” Motley, Jr., age 92, of 401 Third Avenue, Danville, entered the gates of heaven on Thursday, February 9, 2017, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Danville on February 13, 1924, to the late Adrian J. Motley, Sr. and Jessie Ferguson Motley. He was married to Josephine C. Hankins Motley who predeceased him in 2012.
Mr. Motley was a member of St. Lukes United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post #325, and the VFW Post #647. He served his country in the Army during WWII being stationed in the European Theater. He retired from US Gypsum where he worked as a machine technician. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, working in the yard, gardening, playing cards, camping, and making stew with his church buddies, which he was known as the “stew master.”
Mr. Motley is survived by his two daughters, Diane M. Turner and husband James, of Richmond, and Debbie Motley of Danville; and daughter number three, Regina Taylor, of Danville. Other survivors include a brother, Nelson Ferguson Motley and wife, Elaine, of Virgilina, VA; sister, Nancy Terry, of Danville; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hair; brother-in-law, Walter Hankins, Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Motley was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Elizabeth Motley.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Susan Hannah officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Barker Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Garden
