Bobby Wayne Mitchell, Sr., age 75, of Danville, VA, left this earth for an afternoon tee time with some old friends, on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Mr. Mitchell was born on February 23, 1943, in Chatham, VA, a son of the late William W. Mitchell, Sr. and Nannie Keatts Mitchell. He was a member of the PGA Tour where he played all over the world. Mr. Mitchell was also a member of the Senior PGA Tour and the Danville Golf Club. He won several tournaments including the 1971 Cleveland Open, the 1972 Tournament of Champions and he finished second in the 1972 Masters. Mr. Mitchell enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Mr. Mitchell taught golf in Finland for 25 years, after his tour playing days. He was married to Dorothy Hancock Mitchell who survives of the residence and was of the Baptist faith and walks with his savior Jesus Christ today.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Bobby Mitchell, Jr. and Kenneth Alan Mitchell (Ginny); step-grandchildren, Scott L. Wyatt, Kimberly P. Emerson, and Justin D. Vaughan; granddaughter, Amanda K. Mitchell; sister, Betty Wallace of Hampton, VA; two brothers, William W. Mitchell, Jr. and Ricky L. Mitchell both of Danville, VA; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 3:00 PM at Swicegood Funeral Home with Reverend Wayne Wallace officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be made to State Line Baptist Church, 651 Holland Rd, Danville, VA 24541, or to another church or charity of your choice.
