Mr. Calvin Garnett Collins, age 84, of 139 Parkland Drive, Danville, VA, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, VA.

Mr. Collins was born on August 23, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, VA, a son of the late Ryland G. Collins and Catherine Gatewood Collins. He lived most of his life in Swansonville and Danville where he graduated from Whitmell Farm Life School on May 30, 1950.  Mr. Collins served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. After thirty years, he retired as a salesman from Home Beneficial Life Insurance. He began his Christian life in Swansonville United Methodist Church serving on many committees but was most proud of serving as the Sunday School Superintendent for many years. Later in life he became a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He enjoyed many activities in the church such as the Gospel Choir, Second Chance Sunday School, Third Thursday Lunch and the Community Hot Dog Lunch. He was also an active member of the Improved Order of Redmen 124 Poquoson Tribe. He was a kind and unselfish caregiver. He loved to hear and tell jokes and loved to listen and talk about Bluegrass music. He was also a member of the early morning coffee group at McDonald’s.

Mr. Collins is survived by two nephews, John Collins (Sandra) and Jeffrey Collins; five nieces, Kathy Collins Dix (Ricky), Jean-Carol Collins Johnston, Amy Collins Licata (Jay), Linda Collins Matthis (Chris) and Jan Collins Yoder; and a sister-in-law, Janice Barker Collins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Carroll Collins, Milton Collins, and Douglas Collins; and one baby sister.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Reverend Charles Wickham officiating. Interment will follow the service in Highland Burial Park with Military Honors conducted by the US Army. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 409 Arnett Blvd, Danville, VA 24540.
