Mr. Jewel Edward Matthews, age 71, of 542 Riveroak Drive, Danville, Virginia, died on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Duke Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina.

Mr. Matthews was born on December 7, 1944, in Danville, Virginia, to the late Thomas Irvin Matthews and Lucy Hobbs Matthews Jones.

He worked as a roofer in construction and was of the Holiness faith. Most of his life was lived in Danville.

Mr. Matthews is survived by one brother, Thomas Neal Matthews of Danville; sisters, Elsie Milan and her husband Gerald of Providence, NC, Betty Lawhorn of Lexington, NC, Jo Ann Horne and her husband Roy of Danville, VA; and caregiver, Janice Street of Danville, VA.

In addition to his parents Mr. Matthews was predeceased by two sisters, Hazel Jeanette Taylor and Mary Irvin Huffman.

Memorial services will be conducted Monday, June 20, 2016 at Swicegood Funeral Home at 2 pm with Rev. Mike Harp and Rev. Roy Horne officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service.
