Lewis I. Ramey III

July 19, 1944 ~ October 5, 2015 (age 71) 71 Years Old

Lewis I. Ramey, III, peacefully went Home on October 5, 2015, having been surrounded by the people that loved him after a lengthy decline in health.

Born in Danville on July 19, 1944, Lewis was the son of the late Lewis Irvin Ramey, Jr and Ella Mae Gainey Ramey. In addition, Lewis was predeceased in 2010 by his sister, Willamenia Ramey Parker.

He is survived by his beloved daughter Kathryn Ramey Montgomery and her husband Michael; two grandsons, Rhys Michael Montgomery and Ryland Michael Montgomery, all of Richmond. Also surviving is his nephew, Jeffrey Lewis Williams and wife Tracy of Milton, NC.  Surviving is Kathryn’s mother, Martha Ramey.

Lewis graduated in 1968 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, VA, having earned a Bachelor’s Degree in economics.  He taught high school at John M. Langston High School from 1968 to1972 and at George Washington High School until 1974 at which time he went into real estate.  Later in life, he taught classes at the Governor’s School.  Lewis also taught real estate courses at Danville Community College and also for the Mosely Flynn Company.  He was associated with various agencies as Realtor and broker, and he earned the Graduate of the Realtors’ Institute (GRI) designation at the University of Virginia.  Lewis was also a licensed auctioneer, having completed the course at the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering.  He was a past member of the Danville Board of REALTORS, served as President of the Board of Realtors in 1982, and was named “Realtor of the Year” in 1982. His last position was with Wilkins &Company, from which he retired when his health declined.

During his lifetime, Lewis was a member of many civic organizations including the Danville Jaycees, the Poquoson Tribe No. 124 Improved Order of Redman, the Friars Club, and Sons of the American Legion Post 1097.  In addition, he was a past member of the local Masonic orders, having been a member of Morotock Lodge, he received degrees in both York Rites and Scottish Rites, and earned the 32nd degree designation.  He confirmed the 31st degree for the Scottish Rite. He was a past member of ACCA Temple of Richmond. While his daughter attended Sacred Heart School, he was an active member of the PTA.  Lewis was a member of the local VPI Boosters Club and was very proud of his alma mater.

Lewis had an abiding friendship and love for Eddie Allgood, and when Eddie had a decline in health, Lewis offered to help with the weekly “eddie’s Colyum.” Lewis and Martha co-authored “eddies’ Wednesday Colyum” for the Danville Register & Bee for over 20 years, and he was proud of that accomplishment.

Lewis will be remembered for his kindness to others and as someone who loved music and fun.  He was a devoted father who inspired his daughter to dream big, relish new adventures, and live fully with a loving heart.

The family will be at the home of Martha Ramey, 187 Howeland Circle, Danville, VA.  Graveside rites will be conducted at Schoolfield Cemetery by Dr. Cam McIntire on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.
