Mrs. Marie Dove McIver Mills, age 89, of 334 Whippoorwill Lane, Pelham, NC, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at her home.

Mrs. Mills was born on March 9, 1928, in Danville, VA, to the late Alton McIver and Ruth Edwards McIver. She lived in Bedford, VA as a child and graduated from Bedford High School prior to moving to Danville to attend nursing school. She graduated from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1948 and was a member of the School of Nursing Alumni Association. Mrs. Mills worked as a registered nurse for Dr. Charles Earley and Dr. James Nevin for 29 years before retirement.

She had been a proud member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Virginia Division, and Anne Eliza Johns Chapter since 1965. She was proud of her southern heritage and enjoyed reading and research of the Civil War. Mrs. Mills was an avid reader of all types of books. She loved American and British history and biographies of our great leaders. She believed in staying active in local, state, and national political issues.

Mrs. Mills will be remembered for her many interesting and funny stories. She was a very smart woman and loved sharing her knowledge with others. During her lifetime many friends trusted and depended on her for guidance and advice.

 Mrs. Mills is survived by her daughter, Kelley Mills Payne (Mark); son, Douglas Mills; granddaughter, Emily Sparks (Jason); great-granddaughters, Hailey Sparks and Kiersten Sparks; granddaughter, Nikki Johnston (Ronald); great-grandchildren, Skylar Johnston and Caleb Johnston.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Mills was predeceased by her beloved husband, Harold Mills in 2007; her son, Alton Berkley Mills in 1971; brothers, Randolph McIver of El Paso, TX and James McIver of Richmond, VA; and sister, Ruth McIver Fizer of Roanoke, VA.

A Memorial Service will be conducted Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Whippoorwill Forest Church of Christ with the Reverend Theron Hall officiating. The family will receive friends after the service. A private Interment will follow at a later date in Danville Memorial Gardens.
