June 13, 1951 ~ February 23, 2017 (age 65) 65 Years Old

Mary Catherine Chaney Edmunds

RINGGOLD, VA –Mary Catherine Chaney Edmunds, 65, left this earth for her heavenly reward on Thursday, February 23, 2017, at the Danville Regional Hospital, Danville, VA.

She was born in Danville, VA June 13, 1951, the younger daughter of the late Dallas Abraham Chaney and the late Elsie Louise Crowder Chaney. On September 16, 1994, she married Michael Edmunds who survives.

Mrs. Edmunds, a member of Victory Baptist Church, was a devout Christian who often witnessed to others how thankful she was to God for His plan of salvation.  A graduate of Danville Community College, she chose a career of service to others, working as a staff nurse at Danville Regional Hospital from 1987-1995. Quite the jokester, Mrs. Edmunds could deliver tall tales; her patients loved her and she loved making them laugh.

She was full of love for her family and the stars of her life were her four children. She loved to sing and her family has fond memories of her singing to them. With a memory like an elephant, Mrs. Edmunds could remember every detail of an experience that had occurred years ago.  Her family lovingly admits there was never a dull moment when she was around! Even after open-heart surgery in 2008, she was there for family outings, school programs, family vacations, and sports events.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 22 years, are four children:  Michael Dale Wheeler (Laurie), Mary Louise Bernard Shelton (Rickie), William Simpson Bernard III, and Dustin Bernard (Brandie). Ten grandchildren: Chaysten Wheeler, Rickie Shelton Jr. (RJ), Mary Brooke Shelton, Dallas Wheeler, MacKennon Shelton, Aaden Bernard, Genisis Bernard, Rayla Kay Shelton, Tegan Bernard, and Talia Bernard. One sister: Nancy Chaney Robinette (George). Three nieces: Cindy Robinette Woodward (Kent), Sarah Robinette Michaels, and Ruth Robinette Spivey. Five great-nieces: Lindsey Daniels, Meredith Spivey, Natalie Michaels, Rachel Spivey, Laura Spivey; and one great-nephew: Christopher Michaels. Two stepchildren: Michael Edmunds Jr. (Jonie) and Carrie Beth Carter (BJ). Four step-grandchildren: Kelsey Edmunds, Morgan Edmunds, Michael Edmunds, and Elizabeth Carter. She was predeceased by her second husband, William Simpson Bernard, Jr. She was also once married to Michael Wheeler who survives.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 26, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home, 2025 North Main Street, Danville, Va. Interment will be at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at Barker Funeral Home, Saturday, February 25, from 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of your choice. Barker Funeral Home is serving the Edmunds family.
