Welcome to the memorial page for

Ray Eugene Dillard

February 24, 1926 ~ November 29, 2013 (age 87) 87 Years Old

Ray Dillard, age 87, went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 29, 2013 after a courageous fight with declining health over the past few years. Although his long fought battle with illness often robbed him of breath and strength, he was never bereft of his humor, wit, and gift of gab!
Ray was born February 24, 1926 in Erwin, North Carolina to the late Carl and Pearl Prather Dillard. After attending public schools in Danville, Virginia, he entered World War II after Pearl Harbor and served in the United States Navy for the duration. After the war Ray resided at various times in Greensboro and Danville and was employed at a number of different jobs. On June 03, 1966 he married his wife, Nell Gibson Dillard, who survives him.
Ray retired from Dan River Mills after many years of faithful employment. He was an avid gardener who shared his abundant harvests with his friends, neighbors, and church family. For many years, shoppers in Danville and the surrounding area enjoyed his greens, squash, and berries at the Midtown Market. Ray was a long time member of Alcoholics Anonymous and had recently received his 40 year chip. He was a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church where he served as deacon, usher, and choir member. Ray was a lover of music and often sang while he played the banjo and guitar. Ray was also a Civil War buff, and he enjoyed a vast knowledge of its battles and generals.
In addition to his wife, Nell, Ray is survived by one son, Bobby Dillard of Manassas, VA; brothers:; Jack Dillard, of McLeansville, NC and Paul Dillard, of Albuquerque, NM; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Ray was predeceased by his son, Sandy Dillard and brother, James Dillard.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 Pm on Sunday December 01, 2013 at Providence Baptist Church with Reverend Lee Cook and Reverend James L. Grasty, Jr. officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Sunday, December 01, 2013 at the church. Interment will follow in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery. At other times, the family will be at the residence:  64 Jeffers Rd., Providence, NC. Military honors will be provided.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Providence Baptist Church.
