Rufus Dickens passed peacefully in his sleep at his residence at 1031 Halifax Road, Danville, VA, on August 16, 2015 after a long illness and battle with cancer. Born in Ruffin, NC on August 3. 1928, he was the son of the late Eugene Dickens and Katie Dickens. He was a farmer and Dan River Inc. worker until his retirement. In addition to his wife, Eunice Turner Curry Dickens, of the residence, he is survived by his children, Jimmy Dickens of Greensboro, David Dickens of Reidsville, Shirley Edwards of Greensboro, Mike Dickens of Danville, Linda Dickens of Eden and Betsy Dickens Johnson of Ohio. Other survivors include his step-children, Judy Lyles, Norma Simmons, Miriam Long, James Curry, Calip Curry, Sr., Georgia Lawson, and Walter Curry of the home; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and his first wife, Martha Grubbs Dickens, his was predeceased by his brothers, Herman Dickens, Paul Dickens, Marvin Dickens, and his half -brothers, Dewey Hooper, and Wallace Hooper; half-sister, Birdie Hooper, and a step-daughter, Gloria Curry Dickens. Funeral services for Mr. Dickens will be held at Fellowship Baptist Church at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 20, 2015 with Pastor Lawrence Morris and Pastor Allan Morris officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service, and at other times will be at the residence.
