Vaso Josephine (Matsatsos) Perdue

August 14, 1929 ~ January 13, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old

Vaso Josephine (Matsatsos) Perdue, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 13, 2017 at her daughter’s home in Richmond, VA after a long and difficult battle with Altzheimer’s Disease.

Vaso (Vi to her friends) was born on August 14, 1929 in Mooresville, North Carolina to Peter and Maggie Matsatsos. The fourth of six children, she was predeceased by siblings Stama Cox, Margaret Beckner, Chriso New, and Peter Mack Matsatsos and is survived by her sister Catherine “Kitty” Sauerbeck.

Vi graduated from George Washington High School in 1947 and continued her education at Danville Technical Institute.  She married the love of her life, Bernie S. Perdue, in Monterey, California on February 14, 1949 after traveling by herself across country by train where he was stationed with the U. S. Army.  Her husband predeceased her on June 21, 1988.  As an Army wife and mother of four, Vi traveled the country and world with her family.  After retiring from the Army, they settled in Danville, VA where Vi worked as a weaver at Dan River Mill and a salesperson at Belk-Leggett’s downtown department store before joining her husband as Office Manager at his State Farm Agency where she obtained her own insurance license.

Vi was an active member of Stokesland United Methodist Church upon returning to Danville.  At Stokesland she served in many leadership roles including President and Treasurer of the Stokesland United Methodist Women, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Nursery Committee Chair, and Vacation Bible School coordinator.  She was also active in the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry of Danville.  Vi volunteered at W. Townes Lea Elementary School where she served as a classroom grandmother from 1992 to 2001.

We will remember Vi as a loving mother, devoted wife, doting grandmother and great-grandmother, and loyal friend. She was a woman known for her bright red lipstick, strong work ethic, love of education and children, and devotion to God.

Vi leaves behind her four children, Ron Perdue (Lynda) of Gulfport, FL, and daughters Donna Perdue Johnson (David) of Richmond, VA, Patricia Perdue Collins (Randy) of Burlington, NC, and Dr. Cyndee Perdue Moore (Jeff) of Danville, VA, nine grandchildren Chelsea Perdue Montemagno (Joshua) and Morgan Perdue of Gulfport, FL, Carly Collins and Leah Collins Perry (Andy) of Burlington, NC, Jordan, Luke (Christine), and Sam Johnson of Richmond, VA, Alex Moore (Krissy) of Danville, VA and Allison Moore of Richmond, VA as well as 11 great-grandchildren (Ezra, Adin, Ky, Kiran, Asher, Logan, Jaxson, Ryann, Lily, Danielle and Gracie).
