James Howard Pruitt

James Howard Pruitt, age 92, passed away on July 28, 2018. He was living at Phoenix Assisted Care in Cary, NC at the time of his death.

James was born April 26, 1926 in Danville to the late Henry Early Pruitt and Pauline Otts Pruitt. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served aboard the USS Hutchins in the Pacific Ocean during WWII. In 1945, he married Minerva Virginia Stanley. Together they built a home on the Holland Road and started a family. He was a part of what has been described as the “Greatest Generation.”

James worked in Dan River Mills for many years before joining the US Postal Service where he worked until his retirement. James will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit. He was always willing to lend a hand to someone in need. Children always had a special place in his heart.

James is survived by his son, Danny Leon Pruitt and his wife, Cathy, of Pelham, NC; his daughter, Brenda Pruitt Chandler and husband, John, of Apex, NC; grandchildren, Elizabeth Hockaday and husband, Josh, of Wilson, NC; John David Chandler and wife, Marisa, of Raleigh, NC, and Jessica Pruitt, of Greensboro, NC; great-grandchildren, Cohen, Liam, and Sophia Hockaday, all of Wilson, NC; and Alexander Chandler, of Raleigh, NC. In addition, he is survived by nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Pruitt is predeceased in death by  his wife, Minerva Stanley Pruitt; brothers, Henry, Raymond, and Jimmy Pruitt; and sisters, Naomi Warrick Curd, Dorothy Adkins, and Betty Brooks.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at Swicegood Funeral Home with Pastor Pam Spencer officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Military Honors will be provided by the United States Navy and American Legion Post 1097.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggest memorial be made to Central Boulevard Church of God.
