John Richard Giles, born October 16, 1927 in Hamburg, Arkansas and graduated from Hamburg High School in May, 1946.
Mr. Giles retired from the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, after serving in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He also served seven tours of duty at Guantanimo Bay, Cuba. He was the manager of the Navy Exchange and a materials handler for a Government Print Shop in Charleston, South Carolina. His service in the Navy was marked by deployments on various types of Navy ships. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 1025 in Geo SE, South Carolina.
Mr. Giles is survived by his brothers, Fay Giles of Price, Utah, and Doyle Giles and wife Frances of Conway, Arkansas; his half brother, JD Higginbotham and wife Gail of Hamburg, Arkansas; and step-son, Larry Cross and wife Phyllis of Cascade, Virginia.
Mr. Giles was preceded in death by his parents, Morris Giles and Jessie Lou Giles Higginbotham; as well as his first wife, Mildred Giles, and his second wife, Frances Giles; along with his step-son, Uzelle Edward Cross.
Mr. Giles was a member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church, in Danville, Virginia.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at Faith Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Austin Merrick and Pastor Ray Lawton officiating. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens, Danville, Virginia.
