Mr. Millard David Dowdy, age 75, of 1469 Claiborne Street, Danville, VA, passed away on  Tuesday, July 25, 2017 surrounded by his loving family, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after a decline in health. 

Mr. Dowdy was born on August 5, 1941 in Danville, VA to the late William David Dowdy and Alvie Lee Williams Dowdy.  David (Paw-paw) was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a very selfless man, who would put everyone else before himself. David enjoyed watching baseball and wrestling. On April 17, 1966, he married the love of his life Carolyn Crowder Dowdy.

Mr. Dowdy first worked at Dan River, Inc., and later retired from Brockway Glass. He was of the Baptist faith.  He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War being honorably discharged with the rank of E4SP.  During his tenure, he was awarded several medals including the Good Conduct Award, the National Defense Award, the Vietnam Campaign Award, and the Rifle Marksman Award.

Mr. Dowdy is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Carolyn Crowder Dowdy, of the residence; children, Bryan Dowdy and wife Rhonda and Carla Dewberry and husband Alton, who was also Mr. Dowdy’s special caregiver for the past several years; grandchildren, William Dowdy, Noah Dowdy, Hannah Dewberry of Campbell University, and Katelyn Dewberry. In addition, he is survived by a sister, Omie Hartness (John) and nephews, J. D. Hartness and JoAnthony Hartness.

The family will receive friends at Barker Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, July 28, 2017 from 6:00 – 7:30 P.M. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 1469 Claiborne Street, Danville.  Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Clark Crowder officiating.  Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors being provided by the United States Army and the American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard.
