Richard Kenneth Mell, 71, of 460 Blaire Lane, Keeling, VA, left this earth to his heavenly home on Friday, May 12, 2017.  He was of the Methodist faith.

He was born on January 3, 1946, in Carleton, Michigan to the late Edward Leroy Mell and late Emma (Buckingham) Mell.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Nancy (Carpenter) Mell; his daughter, Christine Mell of Jacksonville, Florida; and two sons, Daniel (Danielle) Mell of Danville, and Jason (Tina) Mell of Dry Fork; Seven grandchildren, Destini Brooks, Breanna Mell, Stephanie Mell, Jacob Mell, Nick Mell, Tyler Mell, and BJ Upton; and one great-grandson, Brayden.

He is also survived by four brothers, the late Thomas Mell of Careton, Mich., Donald Mell of Carleton Mich., Ronald Mell of East Tawas, Mich., and Robert Mell of Monroe, Mich.; two sisters, Shurley (Mell) Lester of Temperance, Mich., and the late Marilyn (Mell) Yearly of Rosehill, Va.; 15 nieces and nephews; his best friend that was more like a brother, Clarence (Snook) Shelton Jr.; and special pets, Charlie and Rufus.

He worked 17 years for D.T. & I. Railroad in Flat Rock, Mich. Ran and owned Ranch Market convenience store in Keeling, Va. and later was a truck driver hauling tobacco and logs.  He built 4 houses and the convenience store.  He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and loved building things.

Graveside services will be conducted on Monday, May 15, 2017, at 2p.m. at the Pruitt family Cemetery, 2007 Mercy Seat Road, Sutherlin, VA 24594
