Carolyn (Crowder) Dowdy

Mrs. Carolyn Crowder Dowdy, age 77, of Danville, VA, passed away on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at Chatham Health & Rehab, in Chatham, VA.

She was born on January 21, 1944, in Spring Garden, VA, to the late George Carter Crowder, Sr. and Ruth Virginia Terry Crowder. Carolyn (Nana) was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a very selfless woman, who would put everyone else before herself. In her younger years, she enjoyed crafting and gardening, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Carolyn was a wonderful cook. On April 17, 1966, she married the love of her life Millard David Dowdy, who predeceased her on July 25, 2017.

Carolyn was a homemaker, and in her earlier years she worked as a type setter for the Commercial Appeal and was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her children, Bryan Dowdy and his wife, Rhonda and Carla D. Dewberry and her husband, Alton, who was a very special son-in-law to Carolyn; grandchildren, William Dowdy, Noah Dowdy, Hannah Dewberry, and Katelyn Dewberry of Emerson College; siblings, Lois Walker and Jane Mitchell and her husband, Roger; sisters-in-laws, Nancy Crowder and Omie and her husband, John D. Hartness; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dowdy was predeceased by her siblings, Vernon Crowder and George Crowder, Jr.

The family will receive friends at Barker Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 1469 Clairborne St. Danville, VA. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home with Rev. Clark Crowder officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
