Charlene Piercy Obituary

On Thursday January 27, 2022, Charlene Kathleen Piercy, 68, of Roanoke, VA, passed away after a three-year battle with cancer. Charlene was born June 13, 1953 in Norwalk, CA, one of ten children of Charles Kinnee Porrett and Alma Louise Duckwitz Porrett. Charlene graduated from high school in Altus, OK before joining the US Air Force in 1973. She served four years as a ground radio communications equipment repair(wo)man, attaining the rank of Sergeant before being honorably discharged in 1977. While stationed at Little Rock Air Force Base, she met her husband, Walter David Piercy, and they married June 11, 1977. Walter had a daughter, Christie Leigh, from a previous marriage who Charlene loved dearly. Charlene obtained her associate degree from Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, VA before moving to the United Kingdom with her husband where they went on to have their daughter, Candice Dawn, in 1982. Charlene worked for Pepsi Bottling Group in Danville and Roanoke, VA from 1994 until 2008. She went on to receive a second associate degree in pharmacy tech from National College and worked as a pharmacy technician for Neighbor Care Pharmacy in Roanoke, VA until retirement in 2012.
Charlene will be remembered as a quiet but generous woman who often sent her family and friends cards for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and sometimes for no reason at all. She was an avid baker and was well-known for her elaborately decorated cakes and cookies as well as her notoriously flaky pie crusts. Charlene loved Virginia Tech football after adopting the team upon her daughter’s admission to VT and tried to never miss a televised game.
Charlene is survived by her husband, Walter David Piercy, of Roanoke, VA, her daughter, Candice Dawn Piercy and her husband, David Wayne Perkey, of Vicksburg, MS and her step-daughter Christie Leigh Brunswick and her husband, Bill Herbert Brunswick of Danville, VA as well as her brothers Charles and Art Porrett and her sisters, Jean Stout, Helen Porrett-Redd, Mary Porrett, and Rose Chamberlain. She is preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Margaret Davis, Joyce Mitchell, and Carolyn Cuellar.
A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at 2 pm at Highland Burial Park in Danville, VA. Visitation will be at Swicegood Funeral Home in Danville, Virginia, on Tuesday from 6:00-7:30 pm.
