Grady Carrigan Obituary

Grady Lee Carrigan, age 89, of Danville, Virginia passed away peacefully Monday evening, February 9, 2026, at SOVAH Health in Danville. Born on January 22, 1937, he was the beloved son of the late Charles and Thelma Carrigan.

Grady is survived by his treasured children, Carol Caldwell (husband Chris), Steven Carrigan (wife Connie), and Susan Carrigan; his cherished grandchildren, Catherine Carter (husband James) and Lauren Carrigan (husband John Smith); his dearly loved great grandchildren, Christopher James Carter and Noah Grady Carter; his nephew Charles Lee and his wife Aew, whom he loved like his children; Jeanette Nicholson, his wife’s best friend, honorary sister and godmother to his children, whom he also claimed as family; as well as Mildred Herndon, his sister-in-law.

Grady was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 64 years, Martha Elizabeth Carrigan; his firstborn son, Jeffrey Lynn Carrigan; and his brother, Harold Carrigan.

Not only was Grady a devoted husband and father, he was a great man of faith whose life was marked by service, integrity, and a love for others.

While attending college in Washington, D.C., he met the love of his life, Martha. Their marriage was known for its enduring love and shared faith. Together they built a life rooted in commitment and purpose. Eventually, they moved to Danville, Virginia, where they raised their three children and where he lovingly built Martha’s dream home, which was a place she would call home for the next 32 years and one filled with memories, laughter, and hospitality.

He dedicated over 30 years of his professional life to Goodyear Tire and Rubber, where his work ethic and expertise earned the respect of colleagues and friends. He held a master’s degree in Transportation, a testament to his commitment to learning and excellence in his field.

As a true man of God, he lived his faith openly and consistently. He was deeply active in his church throughout his life, serving faithfully as a deacon and as a choir director in earlier years. He firmly believed in putting God first and made it a point to instill that value in his family and all those with whom he came in contact.

Known for his humor, kindness, and generous spirit, he was often the first to offer a helping hand when someone was in need. He gave freely of his time, resources, and energy, never hesitating to sacrifice for the good of others. His warmth and compassion left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

His love, guidance, and example will continue to live on through his family. His life was one of quiet strength, faithful service, and unwavering love, which is a legacy that will be cherished and remembered always.

The family would like to specifically thank the fourth floor nurses at SOVAH Health for the love and care that they provided Grady in his final days. Furthermore, the family extends heartfelt gratitude for the love and support shown to them during this season of deep grief and loss.
