Herman Wayne Thornton Sr.

Herman Wayne Thornton, Sr. age 81, of Providence, NC, passed away on Friday, October 6, 2023, at his residence.

Mr. Thornton was born on June 11, 1942, in Danville, VA, a son of the late, Albert Lee Thornton and Edna Royster Simmons.

He lived most of his life in the Danville area and Providence. He was a graduate of Averett University with a B.S. in Business Management and was employed with the USPS until his retirement. Mr. Thornton proudly served his country in the US Army. Mr. Thornton was married to Carolyn Tolley Thornton for 62 years who survives.

In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by his children, Herman Wayne Thornton, Jr.(Kathy) of Johnson City, TN and DeeDee Crews (Jason) of Leasburg, NC; grandchildren, Derek Myers (Erica),Dustin Myers (Patricia), Paige Thornton, Taylor Winkles (Jonathan), Katie Carter (Chris) and Jessye Davis (Lee); great grandchildren, Jake Allen Carter, Aurora Myers and Troy Davis; sister, Hazel Miller (Clyde); son-in-law, Doug Myers and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Cindy Myers and sisters, Edith Frank, Lucy Johnson, Doris Kegley and Macey Laleman.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Swicegood Funeral Home with Reverend Mitch Cifers officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Mt. View Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the American Legion Post 1097.
