Leonard Lee “Catfish” Nelson age 88, of Sutherlin, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on May 24, 1934, in Danville, VA, to the late George Nelson and Josie Prather Nelson.
Before his retirement, Mr. Nelson was the owner/manager of Old Dutch Supermarket on Court Street. Also, he worked for A & P Grocery. Mr. Nelson served his country in the United States Army Paratroopers. He was a taxidermist and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Nelson and his wife, Joann owned and lived on a farm which had always been his dream where they enjoyed much happiness. In addition, he was a member of Cross Road Baptist Church in Halifax, VA.
He is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn W. Nelson, of the residence; children, Tammy Anderson, of Danville; Lisa Rankin, of High Point, NC; and Donna Gibson (Charles), of Ringgold; Stephen Nelson; granddaughter, Jordan Burnett (Josh); and great-grandchildren, Caroline and Colton Burnett.
Also, Mr. Nelson is survived by his sister-in-law, Virginia Nelson; nephew, Steve Nelson; and two special young men, Christopher Hudson and Levi Hudson.
In addition, Mr. Nelson is survived by his step-children, Connie Bledsoe (Pete), of Keeling; Dean Gibson (Tami), of Sutherlin; Tim Gibson (Teresa), of Danville; Glenn Gibson, of Danville; step-grandson, Nathanial Gibson.
In addition to his parents, Leonard was predeceased by his brother, Roy William Nelson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at Swicegood Funeral Home with Reverend Daniel Whitt officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
