Vincent Boyce Oglesby Sr.

Vincent Boyce Oglesby, Sr., of Danville, VA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 4, 2023,surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years old.

Vince was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Dorothy "Dot" Vaden Oglesby; his parents, Daniel and Beeda Oglesby; his brothers, Hermon and Clarence Oglesby; and his sisters, Helen Jarman and Grace Poyner. He is survived by one son, Vincent "Boyce" Oglesby, Jr., and his wife, Linda, of Apex, NC; two grandsons, Michael Oglesby and his wife, Lauren, of Cary, NC, and Samuel Oglesby and his fiancée, Rachel, of Durham, NC; two sisters-in-law, Mary Goodman, of Danville, and Sylvia Vaden, of Nashville, TN; and many nieces and nephews.

Vince was born on July 16, 1933, in Morehead City, NC. He grew up on a farm on the shores of Calico Bay and was a graduate of Morehead City High School. He received a Bachelor's and a Master's degree from East Carolina University. He taught at Warwick High School in Newport News, VA, before moving to Danville, where he worked at George Washington High School for many decades, first teaching history and then serving as head librarian. He was a man of deep faith, who loved his Bible, and a devoted member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, deacon, elder, treasurer, and trustee. In recent years, he attended Unity Presbyterian Church after it merged with Shelton. He had a lifelong love of gardening and always had fresh vegetables to share with family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle; and a friend to many.

The funeral will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, May 10, at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, 564 West Main Street, Danville, with the Rev. Jeffrey Wright officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends between 1 and 2 PM on Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
