Walter “Lee” Meeks, Sr. age 78, of Satellite Beach, FL, passed away on Friday, July 31, 2020 at his residence.
Mr. Meeks was born on January 23, 1942, in Danville, VA, a son of the late Lynn “Chick” Meeks and Jessie Lea Vannoy Meeks. He was born and raised in Danville, VA and then joined the Army at age 17 enduring the Cuban Missile Crisis and serving two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot with the 101st Airborne Division for thirty years, retiring with the rank of CW 4. Mr. Meeks was married to Chun S. Meeks who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Carrie Vander Sluis (Mike) Walter Lee Meeks, Jr., and Mary Meeks Landeros (Sean); grandchildren, Dylan Bennett, Cody Vander Sluis, Jackson Lee and Mia Landeros; sister-in-law, Patricia D. Meeks; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother Kenneth Meeks.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, August 10, 2020, at 2:00 PM at Swicegood Funeral Home with Rev. Adrian Moore and Dr. Doug Barber officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of his niece, Kim Barber, 925 Oak Hill Road, Danville, VA. Interment will follow in Schoolfield Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the U.S. Army and American Legion Post 1097.
