Barbara Carter Shumate, age 85, of 192 Beech Ave. Danville, VA, died on Monday, September 4, 2017 at SOVAH Danville.

Mrs. Shumate was born on August 22, 1932, in Danville, VA, a daughter of the late Robert Redmond Carter and Louise Megginson Carter. She lived all of her life in Danville, VA where she was a homemaker. Mrs. Shumate was married to Glynn O. Shumate, Sr. who survives. She was of the Methodist faith.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters, Belinda Martin (Danny), Debbie Cifers (James) and Carolyn Westrick (James); a son, Glynn O. Shumate Jr. (Barbara Compton); grandchildren, Sherri Compton (Brian), Daniel Martin (Leslie), David Martin (Shelayne), Jim Cifers (Bobbi Jo), Sundi Rigney, Allen Parrish (Christy), Nikki Fouts (Donald), and Jonathan Westrick; great grandchildren, Peyton Compton, Caleb Compton, Mason Compton, Jacob Cifers, Benjamin Cifers, Nathan Rigney, Autumn Owen, Sophia Fouts, and Donald Lee Fouts.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a son, Steven Lee Shumate; sister, Iris Hylton; and brothers, Robert Carter, Jr. and Frank Carter.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Reverend Bob Yeaman officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times the family will be at the residence, 192 Beech Ave. Danville, VA, 24541. Interment will follow the service in Danville Memorial Gardens.
