Lois Lee (Cassada) Oakes

Lois Lee Cassada Oakes, age 90, Homestead Hills, died on Monday, May 23, 2016 in Winston-Salem, NC.

Born in Pittsylvania County on July 18, 1925, she was the daughter of the late David Crockett Cassada and Madie Sue Jones Cassada. 

On September 6, 1944, she married Charlie Edward Oakes who predeceased her.  She was a charter member of Christian Heritage Church where she will be remembered for her generosity and her loving personality. One of her great loves was teaching children. She dedicated over 30 years of her life to teaching children in Sunday School and taking care of babies in the nursery. She was a devoted wife and mother whose faith and love will forever touch the lives of her family and friends.

Mrs. Oakes is survived by her daughters, Brenda Oakes Hoover and husband William Hugh Hoover of Goldsboro, NC, Kathy Oakes Newcomb and husband Danny Ray Newcomb of Winston-Salem, NC; daughter-in-law, Gail Watlington Oakes of Myrtle Beach, S. C.; brother, Blair Cassada of Danville, VA.; grandchildren, Ronald Oakes, Jr. and wife Caroline, Michael Shane Hoover and wife Jennifer, Kelly Newcomb Johnson and husband Brad, Ashley Newcomb Birkins and husband Kurt; great-grandchildren, Abigail Oakes, Kathryn Hoover, Jarrett Hoover, William Johnson, Bailey Johnson, Austin Johnson, Charlie  Susan Birkins, Lila Birkins, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition, to her parents and husband Mrs. Oakes was predeceased by her son, Ronald Gene Oakes; brothers, Cloman “Johnny” Cassada, Jones Cassada, Hugh Cassada, Paul Cassada, Latane Cassada, and Douglas Cassada; sisters, Flossie Davis, Doris Perkins, Cecil Walker, Waverly Scearce, Eloise Hudgins, and Virginia Simpkins.

Funeral services will be held at Barker Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Barry Crumpton officiating.  Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.  A visitation will be held at Barker Chapel immediately following the funeral service.
