Carrie (Martin) Fleming

January 13, 1917 ~ August 18, 2017 (age 100) 100 Years Old


Carrie Fleming, 100 passed away peacefully Friday evening, August 18th at the Riverside Health and Rehabilitation center in Danville, VA.  A visitation will be held Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at the West Main Baptist Church at 1 PM. A funeral service will follow at 2pm.

Carrie Fleming was born on January 13, 1917, in Patrick County, VA., the daughter of Martha and Joseph Martin. She and her husband, Carl C. Fleming, were married on December 22, 1937. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary shortly before his death in 2013.

She was also predeceased by her beloved husband Carl C. Fleming, Brother Ed Martin, and his wife, Kitty, her mother Martha Martin and father Joe Martin. She is the last of her generation. Carrie lived a long, happy life, being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be remembered as a dear and loving friend to all her who knew her. She is survived by her daughters, Joan Smith (Doug) and Sheila Meeks (Kim), grandchildren Scott Smith (Mary), Colin Smith (Kelly), Christy Smith (Alec) Justin Meeks (Heather Draper) and six great grandchildren.

She was a great cook and spent her entire life loving her family and leaving them many wonderful memories around the dinner table and tending to her lovely flower and vegetable gardens. She was a life-long and very active member of the Stokesland United Methodist Church. Carrie, known to her family as ‘Susie’, took great pride in everything that she did. She was also a great team bowler and had a case full of trophies to show for it!

 The family owes many thanks and much gratitude to the Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center and their wonderful staff who showed such great love and compassion in their caring for Carrie. Special recognition to “Kiki” Grastby, Sara Katherine Cumbo, and Cheryl Hunt. A special thanks to Dr. Brian Zagol for taking such good care of her and at times going above and beyond the call of duty.
