Shirley (Pete) Delford Poole, age 81, of Pelham, North Carolina passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2017, at his home after a brief illness. 

Mr. Poole was born on March 18, 1936, in Cluster Springs, Virginia, to Almalia (Poole) Bartee. He called South Boston home as he grew up and attended school in that area. 

After finishing school, he worked building roads and bridges for 53 years. He began his career at age 15, working with his uncle Johnny Pool. Pete then went on to work for Roy N Ford Construction and Laramore Construction as a foreman. Mr. Poole was also a member of the National Guard, from 1954 to 1956. Pete loved to watch NASCAR and to garden. 

Mr. Poole was preceded in death by his mother; wife, Betty Poole; his son, Douglas Poole and daughter, Betty Rose Poole. 

Survivors include sons, Jesse Poole of Pelham; Ricky Poole of Pelham; Frankie (Monica) Poole of Salado, Texas; Tommy Poole of Pelham; Brian Poole of Pelham; daughters, Greta Poole of Pelham and Tammy Poole Vaughan of Pelham; grandchildren Chris Poole of Pelham; Brian Poole of New Market, Tennessee; Brandi (Daniel) Rimer of Mosheim, Tennessee; Lisa (Kevin) Jones of Axton, Virginia; Doug (Jennifer) Poole of Pelham; Frankie (Brandi) Poole II of Columbus, Indiana; Susan (Matt) Louden of Columbus, Indiana; Elizabeth Poole of Salado, Texas; Tammy Jennifer Poole of Sulphur Springs, Texas; Brittany Poole of Pelham; Tyler Poole of Pelham; and Hunter Poole of Pelham; along with numerous great-grandchildren. 

His family would extend a warm thank you to his church for their support during his illness and to his daughter Tammy for taking care of him during his last days. 

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, October 23, at 2:00 pm at Swicegood Funeral Home with the Reverend Roger Ewing officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 22, from 6:00-7:30 pm. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
