AJ started his career in law enforcement and working part-time at a funeral home. As a police officer AJ served as State President and National Vice President of non-profit police youth organization (PAL).
In 1986 he entered funeral service full time and became nationally known in the industry for writing articles and speaking to several organizations about his progressive ideas about funeral service. Having served various leadership roles in Pilot Mountain/Surry County including past chairman of United Way, past vice chairman for Habit for Humanity, past president of the Pilot Mountain Merchants Association. AJ currently serves as vice chairman for the town planning and zoning board.
AJ is a licensed funeral director and embalmer in North Carolina, Virginia, Florida & Texas. His expertise in funeral service has led him to become appointed to serve on several national committees in funeral service organizations. In his career he has guided and served thousands of families during their time of need.
Funeral Director - Manager
Kermit served our country for 2 years in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. While serving in the Army he operated M.A.R.S. Radio Station and was a high speed radio operator. Kermit is a 1951 graduate of Gupton Jones Mortuary Science and was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor of Science and a degree in Business Administration. Kermit has been a Funeral Director with Swicegood-Barker Funeral Service and a Manager for the last 38 years. He is very involved with his community as a member for over 52 years with the American Legion Memorial Post 325 and served as a past commander. Kermit also was a member of Poquson Tribe of Redmen #124 and a member of Virginia Tech Alumni Association, Danville Chapter. Kermit is a FCC amateur radio operator general class licensee.
Manager and Funeral Director Trainee
Wendy joined Swicegood-Barker Funeral Service in April of 2012. She is native of Pittsylvania County and graduated from DCC with two degrees in AAS and Averett University with a BBA degree. Currently, she is working on her MBA at Averett University. Wendy plans on starting her career in Funeral Director/Embalmer in the Summer of 2016.
Wendy is married to Jeffery Brannock and has two sons, Michael Trail and Thomas Trail and two grandsons, Hunter Trail and Christian Trail. She attends St. Marks Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Funeral Director/Embalmer/Pre-arrangement Manager
After serving our country for 15 months in Germany, George Davis began working at Mckee Funeral Home in Martinsville and, later, Colbert Funeral Home in Gretna. He received his Director's License at Swicegood Funeral Home in 1964, where he has now served for 48 years. He attends Fairview United Methodist Church where he is involved in the Meals on Wheels program.
Cody is a lifelong resident of Caswell County, NC, and has
been working in the funeral industry since he was thirteen years old. He joined the staff of Swicegood Funeral Home in 2016.
Assistant Funeral Funeral Director
Mr. Leonard Haraway has been involved in the funeral industry for 63 years. In addition, he was a member of the Danville Police Department for many years before joining the Danville Fire Department where he retired as the Captain.
He is a member of the Third Avenue Congregational Church, and he has been married to Ramona Marshall Haraway for 50 plus years. In addition, they have two sons, Rick and Mark Haraway, three grandsons, and one great-grandson.
Mrs. Scearce was raised in Danville from her early childhood. She attended Danville Public Schools and DCC with her focus on bookkeeping/secretarial. She joined the Swicegood-Barker staff in July 2000. She is the widow of Forest Landon Scearce, and is the mother of three daughters and seven grandchildren.
She has more than 35 years experience in customer relations with extensive knowledge of life insurance laws and processing. She is currently the office manager of Barker Funeral Home. Mrs. Scearce is of the Baptist faith.
