Avo Cates Turner

Avo Cates Turner, age 97, of Danville, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Turner was born on October 6, 1919, in Hillsborough, NC, a daughter of the late George W. Cates and Shirley Wyrick Cates. She lived most of her life in Danville, VA, where she retired from Dan River Mills as a weaver. On April 18, 1936, she married Curtis D. Turner who preceded her in death on June 16, 2002. She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.  

Mrs. Turner is survived by a son, Rodger D. Turner (Diane) of Blairs, VA; a daughter, Joyce Gibbs (Bobby), of Danville, VA; a brother, Billy Cates (Delores) of Hillsborough, NC; a sister, Jackie Carden of Hillsborough, NC; four grandchildren, Rhonda, Stephen, Amy and Clint; and six great grandchildren, Austin, Katie, Anna, Adrian, Ivy and Whit.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a son, Garnett L. Turner; four sisters, Verla Mangrum, Ruth Cates, Georgia C. Lane and Marcene C. Coleman; two brothers, Osborne Cates, and Hazo Cates; and three half-sisters, Rosie C. Bishop, Fannie C. Bennett, and Ada C. Hurley.

A Graveside Service will be conducted on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at 2:00 PM in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Roy Jones officiating.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, at Swicegood Funeral Home from 3:30 to 5:00 PM.
